Churchill is a catered Hall of residence situated in Stoke Bishop, an attractive residential part of North Bristol, a stone’s throw from The Downs. The Hall has a beautiful environment to match its location, with a leafy main quad and tree-lined paths to wander through. In addition, Churchill is home to the University’s arboretum and to the botanical gardens. We also now have a small orchard and allotment, so you can grow your own and use our land rather than just looking at it!
Churchill Hall was officially opened in 1959 and for the past half century has been distinguished by a friendly, easy going atmosphere in which first years have been able to find their feet as they set out on their university careers in Bristol. The Hall was extended by the addition of The Holmes, a beautiful building dating back to 1879, and by the building of MPQR block in 1980.
Churchill offers an ideal blend of the formal and the relaxed. It has formal meals for all, but equally popular are sports in our quad (lacrosse, Frisbee, rugby, football, and – in the summer months – sliding into large paddling pools!). The Hall has a very active JCR which runs events ranging from quiz nights to balls, the key events in the calendar being a Christmas Ball, “The Snowball”, a Valentines Ball and a summer garden party. The Hall aims to offer independence without loneliness and all the facilities and activities of a large, mixed hall without institutional impersonality. It has a number of spacious public rooms including common rooms, bar, music practice room, computer room, library, snooker room, table tennis room and launderette. There is also access to tennis and squash courts just over the road, whilst Coombe Dingle, the University’s main sports facility, is only a ten minute walk away.
The first phase of refurbishment took place over summer 2011. This included all accommodation at The Holmes and. bedrooms, bathrooms and pantries in blocks CDE of Churchill Hall. Three more blocks are due for refurbishment during summer 2012.
The Hall offers 341 places in single rooms, with and without basin, plus 15 en suite rooms. All en suite rooms are located in The Holmes. Churchill has groups of four to eight within 16 houses, each of which has a small communal kitchen. The internal arrangements encourage integration, making it easier for people of similar interests to meet and for students to benefit from contact with those studying other subjects. The houses in the Quad have large rooms with good communal shower and bathroom facilities. MPQR blocks have smaller rooms but has a bathroom between every two rooms and a lounge added to the kitchen of each house.

‘Having chosen Churchill after visiting friends here I’ve honestly never regretted it. Each hall is uniquely different and Churchill is really made by the combination of the quirky 1950’s buildings, its setting and most importantly the people who are here.’
James Chance
‘Friendly, nice surroundings set amongst the Botanic Gardens. There’s good support if you need it too.’
Martin Baker
‘I really like the feel of the place. Churchill is also the closest of the Stoke Bishop Halls to Lectures, which is nice in the mornings!’
