Introducing our new teaching space - the Blagdon Building

The Blagdon Building opened this autumn term as a purpose-built teaching space designed to support small-group, collaborative, tutor-facilitated learning. Spanning two floors and accommodating up to 360 students, the building’s open-plan layout has been carefully designed to encourage interaction and active engagement with teaching content.

Located in the heart of the campus, this bright new space will transform how students collaborate on case-based learning and represents a significant addition to Bristol Veterinary School. The building was designed in close partnership with Bristol Veterinary School academics and professional services staff, alongside colleagues from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and the Campus Division. It reflects a strong, collective effort to deliver a modern, state-of-the-art teaching environment.

Constructed using a timber frame that forms both the primary structure and entrance portico, the building features large windows framing the surrounding countryside. At the front, a welcoming outdoor social space provides seating for students to relax and spend time between sessions.

Ahead of its opening at the start of the new academic year, Vice-Chancellor and President Evelyn Welch and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost Judith Squires visited the building for a site tour.

Commenting on the new space, Evelyn Welch said: ‘Our Langford campus is a very special place. With beautiful grounds and spaces for walking and working, it feels a perfect place to study veterinary sciences and more. I am delighted to see the new teaching building complete and ready for the start of term. Designed for case-based learning, it will support our students as they develop the team-working skills they will need in professional practice.’

Judith Squires added: ‘I am delighted that we have been able to create such a well-designed teaching space that sits so comfortably within its Langford setting, while providing significant new opportunities for student learning and emerging pedagogies.’

Prospective students and visitors can explore the Blagdon Building for themselves at an upcoming Open Day. The space is also bookable for all staff and a great option for away days.
