Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences

The Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences has strategic responsibility for leading and managing the academic faculty to enable fulfilment of the University’s vision and strategy across education, research, enterprise development, internationalisation, community engagement and campus development.

Role and responsibilities

The Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences:

  • delivers strategic plans to address challenges, build on strengths and realise opportunities for the faculty and its Schools across teaching and research within the University’s strategic ambitions and constraints
  • understands and supports the distinctive nature of the disciplines and interdisciplinary opportunities within the Faculties and Schools
  • Stimulates a working environment within the faculty that is supportive of staff, embraces change and encourages active engagement and a positive contribution from staff
  • Oversees the delivery of new academic structures across the faculty that will best facilitate the academic leadership teams to implement University strategy.

Professor Sarah George (she/her) became Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in September 2026.

Professor Sarah George's biography

Professor Sarah George is a graduate of the University of Wales (BSc 1991, PhD 1994). She joined the University of Bristol in 1994 and became Professor of Cardiovascular Signalling in 2010. At the University of Bristol Sarah has been Head of Department of Translational Health Sciences and Deputy Head of the Medical School (2019-2022), Dean of Faculty of Health Science (2022-2023) and Dean of Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (2023 – 2026).

Her translational research has extended the understanding of cardiovascular cell signalling and evaluated novel therapies including gene therapy, new drugs and tissue engineering that could benefit patients with heart and cardiovascular diseases. She has developed and is Director of two MSc programmes and has supervised over 30 PhD students to completion.

She is Chair of the Board of Langford Veterinary Services, a University of Bristol subsidiary and has served on British Heart Foundation (BHF), Medical Research Council and Heart Research UK grant review committees and is currently Chair of Discovery Science Fellowship Committee for BHF and Vice Chair of Clinical Fellowship Committee for BHF. Since 2021, she has been a Governor of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston.
