Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation
The Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise is responsible for the continuing development and leadership of the University's research strategy.
Role and responsibilities
The Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation:
- leads the Research Excellence Framework (REF) preparations
- supports large, multidisciplinary, cross-faculty research programmes
- oversees University-level research institutes
- engages with key research funders and external partners.
Post holder
Professor Phil Taylor (he/him) departed the university on 31st July 2024 to take up his post as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bath.
Professor Guy Poppy (he/him) will become the new Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation from 1st October 2024.
Professor Guy Poppy's biography
Professor Poppy, who will take up the post on 1 October 2024, is a biologist by background and widely known for his expertise in transforming food systems, both nationally and globally, through themes of human health and sustainability. His roles have included Head of the University of Southampton’s School of Biological Sciences and cross-university directorships focused on interdisciplinary research. He has also served as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Food Standards Agency and Interim Executive Chair of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
