The School of Economics, Finance and Management aims to provide excellence in teaching and learning within a
stimulating research environment.
This programme aims to take graduate students with only limited knowledge of accounting, finance and/or
management and to provide them with an understanding of the key concepts and current issues in the field of
accounting, finance and management. Students will learn the basis of accounting standards and financial reporting,
fundamentals of financial management, and practical management techniques.
The programme will provide students with a sound basis for their future career in a wide range of fields including:
professional accounting firms, consulting firms or public service. Students will learn to think critically and apply
deductive and logical analysis.
Students will also develop a range of transferable skills that will be of value in employment, such as self-learning
skills, writing and communication skills, teamwork and time management skills.

---|---|
|
Acquisition of knowledge and understanding through lectures and linked tutorials/workshops. Workshops will involve the students in exercises for large group work, classes will involve small group work. Tutorials will emphasise student led discussion based on assigned exercises, cases and reading. The development of analytical and problem-solving skills will be developed in core units. Directed and independent reading, with a strong emphasis on effective use of key texts and a range of literature and other information sources: academic texts, journals, articles, Blackboard. IT and numerical skills will be explicitly developed and applied as appropriate in all units. Software packages will be introduced as appropriate, for example to provide "hands on" experience of financial analysis. |
Methods of Assessment | |
Formative assessments in the form of practical questions, written assignments/essays, groupworks, presentations, take place throughout the year. Students will receive either oral or written feedback on their work depending on individual unit structure and specification. Summative assessment in the form of examination, multiple-choice questionnaires, portfolio assignment, and assessed coursework (individual/groupwork) is by the end of the term. Exam/coursework feedback will be provided. The summer dissertation will assess research skills, literature search skills and an overview of relevant theory. |

Intellectual skills are developed through the lecture programme and linked seminars, independent study and coursework. Students are exposed to relevant modes of enquiry and analyses; they are encouraged through class discussion and their individual written work to identify key issues, to summarise and reflect upon key points from their reading, to assess evidence and its relevance. Research skills are further developed through teaching of quantitative methods. |
Methods of Assessment | |
The assessment will be via a variety of written assignments/essays, unseen examinations which test analytical and evaluation skills, problem-solving, report writing and the presentation of arguments. |

Statement of expectations from the students at each level of the programme as it/they develop year on year.
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Certificate |
For a postgraduate Certificate, students are required to complete the first term taught units in the programme. The structure of the degree programme has been designed to engage the student in a cumulative process of developing skills and knowledge through a sequence of complementary stages. In the first term, all Certificate, Diploma and Masters students develop foundational knowledge and understanding of the contemporary issues in Accounting, Finance and Management. They develop general intellectual skills and attributes necessary for that knowledge and understanding; and are required to develop several practical skills. |
---|---|
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Diploma |
For a postgraduate Diploma, students are required to complete all the taught units in the programme. In the second term, all Diploma and Masters students acquire a deeper knowledge and understanding of more specific areas in Accounting, Finance, and Management. These units explore more advanced topics that nevertheless build on the material learned in the first term. The intellectual and practical skills learned in the first term are also developed, applied and extended. |
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Masters |
The dissertation acts as the culmination of the student's progress through the degree programme, as she/he applies the appropriate technical, methodological and intellectual skills that have been developed to a piece of research devised in consultation and supervised by a staff advisor and located clearly within Accounting, Finance and Management. |
The intended learning outcome mapping document shows which mandatory units contribute towards each programme intended learning outcome.
