  • ACTion*
    A local randomised feasibility trial comparing chest tube drainage to therapeutic aspiration in infected pleural effusions. This study is not yet published.
  • AUDIO
    A national randomised feasibility trial exploring the role of pleural biopsies in the diagnosis of pleural infection. This study was published in 2018.
  • MIST2
    A national randomised controlled trial exploring the benefit of intrapleural fibrinolytic and DNase in the management of pleural infection. This study was published in 2011.
  • MIST 3
    A national randomised controlled trial exploring the feasibility of running a trial comparing surgery to intrapleural fibrinolytics in pleural infection. This study is currently recruiting.
  • PACT*
    A local observational study examining the concentration of antibiotics within infected pleural effusions.
  • PILOT
    An international observational cohort study exploring risk factors and outcomes in patients with pleural infection. This study is not yet published.
  • SPIRIT*
    A national randomised feasibility trial exploring the role of medical thoracoscopy in the early management of pleural infection. This study is not yet published.

Pleural infection

usually describes a pleural effusion which has become infected with bacteria, often as a result of concurrent pneumonia. It is a challenging condition which can carry a high risk of death in certain populations and typically needs invasive treatment or drainage alongside antibiotics.
