The eye and brain
Denize Atan has well-established research group investigating genetic, phenotypic, and environmental factors that affect eye and brain development and function. The retina and optic nerve share the same developmental origins as the brain. Therefore, the eye is a relatively simple organ system that can be used to study the central nervous system (CNS).
The research of the Atan group uses a variety of techniques to understand the relationships between the eye and brain: these techniques include molecular genetics, population genetics and epidemiology, as well as functional, behavioural, and computational neuroscience, neuropsychology, and stem cell biology. This has led to research that investigates complex cognitive functions beyond the eye, such as visual memory and intelligence. The research group are currently investigating the following topics:
Neurogenetics and neurodegeneration
Neuro-oncology and Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
