Improving our understanding of supply chain climate impacts means giving staff the tools and information they need to make better choices.
The University will build simple, reliable systems to track emissions from purchasing and share this data with schools and departments, so they can see the impact of their decisions. Suppliers will be expected to provide transparent carbon data and show how they are reducing emissions.
Day-to-day, staff will have access to clear carbon data and practical guidance to help plan purchases and research projects in line with our climate goals.
This approach will improve accountability, strengthen research funding applications and make it easier to choose options that are better for the planet.
Strengthen focus on sustainability in procurement and contract management
Strengthening sustainability in procurement means building environmental considerations into every purchase.
The University will include sustainability criteria in all procurement processes and offer training to all staff on climate-friendly purchasing, waste reduction and circular economy practices.
Day-to-day, staff involved in buying goods or services on behalf of the University will see clearer guidance, updated templates, and tools that make sustainable choices easier and more consistent. We will also work closely with suppliers to reduce carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions.
With support from senior leaders, clear direction, and staff training, this approach will make purchasing more transparent and fairer and encourage innovation from suppliers. It will also help meet funder requirements and support our commitment to the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice.
Increase circularity and shared use of resources
Increasing circularity and shared use of resources means making reuse and sharing a normal part of how the University operates.
We will introduce systems to increase sharing and re-use of equipment, materials, and other resources across schools and departments, supported by clear guidance and easy-to-use platforms.
Day-to-day, staff and students will have easier ways to share resources and access previously used items, avoiding unnecessary purchases and promoting circularity.
With leadership buy-in, strong communication, and integration into procurement processes, this approach will reduce waste, cut emissions and save money.
Embed sustainable food and catering
The University has already made good progress on sustainable food and catering, and this next phase will deepen that commitment.
We will plan menus with environmental impact in mind, highlighting low-carbon, local, and seasonal foods while keeping meals tasty, nutritious and affordable.
Staff and students will see practical changes, like reusable container schemes replacing single-use packaging, and annual campaigns to reduce food waste.
Day-to-day, this means more sustainable menu choices, clear carbon information, and easier ways to reuse and reduce waste.
With leadership support, accurate data, and strong engagement, these actions will cut emissions and costs, reduce waste, and help to normalise more climate-friendly diets.
