Modern language requirements
Our modern language entry requirements are based on recognised external standards and qualifications.
If you're applying for the BA Modern Languages (R900) course but are not currently studying a modern language at A-level, we're happy to consider applicants with an independent language diploma at B1 level as a demonstration of language skills.
Standalone language qualifications at B1 (or equivalent) level in any modern language are considered on an individual basis.
We consider independent language diplomas for French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian. These diplomas are assessed against the criteria set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and can be studied in your own time or through a language centre.
These diplomas are considered when taken in addition to 3 A-levels (or equivalent qualifications) as outlined in our course finder.
You'll need to declare your intention to take one of the qualifications (in the following table) on your UCAS application form, and submit your results when they're available to you.
