MEng Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence with Study Abroad

2027 entry

Course summary

MEng Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence with Study Abroad combines a focus on the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI) with a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of computer science, including opportunities to specialise in a range of advanced fields of both areas. Because of this, our graduates stand out from the crowd with knowledge of recent AI advancements and the underlying technology that powers them. By having a dual focus, our students are highly regarded by employers such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Arm and Cisco, have high earning potential and have wide-ranging career opportunities (discoveruni.gov.uk, 2025).

Core ideas covering both computer science and artificial intelligence are introduced in years one and two. You will learn the principles of algorithms and programming alongside studying the core concepts, tools and methods of artificial intelligence, and the mathematics and statistics underpinning modern computer science and artificial intelligence. Additionally, you will learn how modern computer architecture is organised, the foundations of human-computer interaction, cyber security, and theoretical and data-driven computer science; allowing you to get an understanding of how these topics can affect modern AI usage.

Key components of the course include the AI software team project in year two where you will work in a team to develop an AI application for a real-world client, with help from an industrial mentor, as well as an individual AI project in your final year, co-created and supervised by a member of staff as a leading expert, with opportunities to work with industrial or research partners.

During your year abroad you will study computer science topics that parallel, as far as possible, our curriculum at Bristol. The University has links with universities in countries such as the US, Hong Kong and Australia. Destinations are subject to change year-on-year. To find out more about studying abroad, visit the Centre for Study Abroad.

The University of Bristol was the AI University of the Year (NAIA 2024) and runs the Isambard-AI supercomputer; one of the most powerful and sustainable supercomputers for AI research anywhere in the world. A concentration of high-technology industries in and around Bristol offers unparalleled opportunities both before and after graduation, such as scholarships, summer placements, industrial seminars and exclusive employment opportunities.
