Pre-sessional academic English courses

International applicants must have a good standard of English to study at the University. Each postgraduate programme specifies an English language profile, which you must meet to gain entry on to that programme.

Our Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies (CELFS) offers courses to help you improve your language skills before and during your studies. Find out about pre-sessional courses.

Apply for a pre-sessional course

When you respond to your offer online, you can tick a box to choose a pre-sessional course. The CELFS team will process your application for a pre-sessional course and email you within 14 working days. See more information on how to apply for a pre-sessional course online.

If you did not choose the option of a pre-sessional course on your online application but you want to attend one, please email You must include the following information:

  • your full name
  • application number
  • student number
  • date of birth
  • language
  • the pre-sessional course you want to apply for
  • UKVI IELTS certificate dated to within two years of the start of the programme.

CELFS staff will then update the online application system and process your pre-sessional application. They will contact you about your application by email.

Applicants with offers for degree programmes conditional on meeting the English language requirement should note that attendance on a pre-sessional course does not guarantee progression to the main degree programme. All applicants need to meet the requirements of their offer, as stated in the offer letter.
