Accessibility statement for eVision

This accessibility statement applies to https://evision.apps.bristol.ac.uk.

eVision is the University of Bristol’s Student Information Management system. This web application is managed by the Student Systems Team within the University of Bristol.

We want every user of eVision to be able to use this system. For example, this means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate using just a keyboard
  • employ adaptive technologies, such as screen readers, successfully
  • understand the text content.

How accessible this system is

A partial audit of eVision was undertaken in 2022 to check its compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards. We discovered that the system is not fully accessible:

  • Some pages do not allow keyboard access to full functionality.
  • Some pages require horizontal scrolling.
  • Screen-readers do not work fully on some pages.
  • Keyboard navigation is not in a logical order on some pages.

An audit of our reports was completed. There are several accessibility issues, some of which are not resolvable due to system limitations:

  • Titles and subheadings are not always used.
  • Mandatory fields are not always clearly marked.
  • There is insufficient colour contrast on some screens.
  • Colour and icons are sometimes the only method to convey information.
  • It is not always possible to navigate through a report in a meaningful sequence*.
  • Reports are not dynamically responsive*.
  • It is not possible to zoom in to 200%*.
  • In some cases content needs to be accessed by scrolling in two dimensions*.
  • It is not possible to navigate through all of the screens which display our reports or and parameter selectors solely with a keyboard*.
  • Screen readers cannot read our reports consistently*.

 * Not currently resolvable.

Compliance status

This web application is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 Level AA standard.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

  • Where possible, we fix issues of non-compliance when they are identified.
  • We test all new development against the WCAG 2.2 level AA standard for accessibility.
  • We have included accessibility into our design standards to ensure that new development meets WCAG 2.2 level AA standard.
  • Our systems developers, test analysts and staff responsible for the update, maintenance and development of eVision, have taken accessible development and design training.
  • The importance of improving accessibility is a core consideration of all development work.
  • We have targeted areas for improvement of our reports and most are compliant in the following areas:
    • Text spacing*
    • Content on hover of focus is persistent*
    • Keyboard traps are not present*
    • Sensory characteristics are not used
    • Autocomplete is used where appropriate
    • Reports do not time out and auto refresh
    • Blinking and flashing are not used.

  • To enable report content to be accessed via keyboard most of our reports can be exported to Excel.

*Regular (annual or quarterly) checks will be conducted to make sure that software updates do not affect this.
