Why did you choose Bristol?

I chose to study at the University of Bristol because I was very impressed with it on the Open Day.

The facilities available in the Department of the School of Modern Languages were unlike any of the other universities I looked at.

The flexibility of the course was also another factor, as it gives you the opportunity to study both more traditional units such as literature, but also more modern units such as those relating to sport and modern day culture in the countries where your chosen language is studied.

It is also a very interesting city with lots of cultural events available to take part in, which is something that appealed to me.

What aspect of the course have you enjoyed the most?

I have done one full year so far and I’ve enjoyed every aspect of the course.

The culture and literature units have been broad enough for me to gain a good understanding of what I do and don’t like, easing the decision process for my optional units next year.

I have taken part in course related activities, such as Club Italia and Hispanic Society, which often held language tandems. I’ve also played for the languages intramural netball team and the Hispanic Society intramural basketball team, which kept me active, relaxed and busy on the weekends.

How did you spend your year abroad?

I went to Munich in Germany and Bogotá in Colombia on my year abroad.

I worked in Germany, which I arranged myself. But University staff were very efficient in arranging my study placement in Latin America and responded quickly with any queries I had, both before I left abroad and when I was away.

The support systems in place here are excellent, as is the breadth of choice. The year abroad was undeniably the highlight of my degree and is a fantastic springboard for further career opportunities.

There have been a number of cultural events to take part in, such as Semana Cultural in the HiPLA department - which featured concerts from a Cuban classical guitarist and a Spanish pianist and singer, a graffiti workshop, and a modern languages quiz just to name a few.

What plans do you have for when your course has finished?

After I graduate, I would like to find a job where I am able to use my language skills.

However, after my year abroad, I think that I will have a better idea of what I will want to do, because I will have had some experience translating and interpreting.
