Space systems and technologies

We put the space in aerospace. Our research covers space science, instrumentation, mission design and systems engineering, and spacecraft control through autonomous systems and robotics.

Why it matters

Space systems and technologies underpin many crucial technologies that modern society depends on, including climate and weather monitoring, communications and navigation. Given the increasing complexity of operating in a congested and contested space environment, this research is more critical than ever.

What this theme focuses on

We integrate our strengths in space science, systems engineering and autonomy to drive development of space systems that operate in complex environments.

The space systems and technologies research theme focuses on:

  • Space environment and space weather: We investigate the effects of the space environment on spacecraft and other critical systems, including energetic particle interactions, radiation effects and space weather hazards. Our research combines numerical modelling, laboratory testing and risk assessment, supported by dedicated radiation testing and electrostatics facilities.
  • Spacecraft systems engineering: We develop advanced spacecraft systems through expertise in CubeSat design, electronics, payload integration and model-based systems engineering.
  • Autonomous space systems, robotics and control: We develop autonomous guidance, navigation and control technologies for spacecraft and space robotics. Our research is supported by attitude control experimental facilities and includes autonomous flight systems and hovering rocket technologies.
  • Space instrumentation and advanced sensing: We design and develop scientific instrumentation, sensors and payloads for space applications. Our capabilities include a ground station for satellite data collection, and clean-room facilities for satellite assembly. We also have experience in modelling planetary atmospheres and running planetary analogue experiments.
  • Resilient and secure space systems: We develop technologies that enable spacecraft to operate reliably in challenging and contested environments, addressing hazards from space weather, radiation and cyber threats.
