Life-course cities: planning for long-term human health and wellbeing in the Anthropocene
Dr James Duminy, School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol

UCT host: Associate Professor Andrew Tucker, African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town
Programme dates: Dec 2023 - Dec 2025
The fellowship will be used to develop the ‘city life-course’ concept, with the aim of improving the health of city populations within the context of the global climate crisis. We need to understand how urban health risks, inequalities and needs will evolve over multiple generations, shaped by trends in climate, demography, and urban spatial development. With this knowledge, we can target interventions at different stages of a city’s evolution to improve the health and equity of its population over the decades to come. Cape Town and Bristol will be used as cases to develop and test the ‘city life-course’ approach, which will inform specific guidance for urban health policymakers and planners.
