We are thrilled to announce that Professor John Rarity, Professor of Optical Communication Systems, has been awarded the 2023 Micius Quantum Prize. This award recognises outstanding contributions in the fields of quantum communications, computation, and other quantum technologies.
On hearing the news, Professor Rarity said: “I was extremely surprised and walked around in a bit of a daze for the rest of the day when I found out I had won! I think I had a mild dose of imposter syndrome but now I feel extremely honoured that my works has been recognised.”
The award was announced by the Micius Quantum Foundation during a virtual press conference, attended by a supportive audience of QET Labs staff and students all eager to celebrate Professor Rarity’s achievements.
As a Micius laureate, Professor Rarity will receive 1.25 million Chinese yuan (approx. £132,000) along with a gold medal. He shares this honor with Professor Nicolas Gisin from Geneva University who will receive the same award. The official presentation ceremony is set to take place in China next year.
