‘Aegis’ is an ancient Greek term meaning protection, support or guidanceThe University of Bristol’s Science Partnership Office has initiated a programme for visiting professors in the Faculty of Science, known as Aegis Professors to provide guidance to students and researchers by bringing their up-to-date experience of work into academia.

Michael Cuthbert, the Director of the UK’s National Quantum Computing Centre and former managing director of Oxford Instruments, is amongst the first five Aegis professors, as an honorary Professor in Quantum Technologies. The programme’s initiation was marked with an inaugural panel discussion on the 30th March, chaired by the Dean of Science Prof. Jens Marklof, giving students and staff across the faculty the chance begin their interactions with the professors, covering topics across academic research, impact, entrepreneurship and working in industry.

After Aegis programme’s inaugural event, Michael said “What a great programme across the Faculty of Science at the University of Bristol! I am really looking forward to supporting early career researchers in quantum technologies specifically and entrepreneurs looking to spin out great ideas from Physics more broadly.
