Food Preferences and Gastric Rhythms

2 July 2024

MSc researchers Serena Lee and Angel Velummylum are recruiting for an interesting Psychology study that is running on campus. You will get a £10 Amazon voucher for participating.

In this study we are interested in people’s gastric rhythms (stomach activity) and preferences for various foods. Before you decide to take part in the study, it is important for you to understand what the research would involve.
Please take time to read the following information carefully. Please ask if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

To participate you must:

• Not have any known allergies or intolerances
• Not be vegetarian or vegan
• Be over 18 years of age
• Have a good understanding of English
• Not be pregnant
• Not have a history of eating disorder
• Not have a history of gastrointestinal illness (this is so gastric rhythms can be
accurately measured)
• Be willing to wear sensors on your abdomen (for measures of gastric rhythms)
which will be applied by the experimenter and to shave the skin where the sensors
attach if there is a substantial amount of hair on it.

The test session will last around 1 hour.
You will be asked to complete a widely used personality questionnaire related to health and food.
You are free to withdraw from the study at any point during the testing session without giving any reason.
You will be reimbursed for your time with a £10 Amazon voucher.

All data collected in this study will be anonymous and it will be stored in an online database publicly available and it may also be used in scientific outputs such as presentations and publications.

Your participation in the study is entirely voluntary and at the end of the test session you will be debriefed about the purpose of the study and given the opportunity to ask the experimenter any questions you may have.
