Perceiving the Toughness of a Physical Object: A Digitally Embodied Approach

3 November 2023

The Bristol Interaction Group (BIG) are conducting research to advance understanding of perceptual cognition in the field of human-computer interaction.

This in-person study aims to understand the perceptual toughness (break-ability) of physical objects, through physical impact testing (a method used to test the toughness of a material) and principles of ecological psychology (a non-representational theory of perception). Anybody who meets the study criteria is welcome to take part. Participation should take 30-45 minutes and on completion of the experiment participants will receive a £10 Amazon voucher.

Experiments will be undertaken at the BIG lab, Queen’s Building, University of Bristol, BS8 1TR.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • 18+

  • Fluent in English

  • Normal or corrected-to-normal vision

  • Able to safely and comfortably lift a 4.5kg weight from ground to head height

If you meet the eligibility criteria and wish to join the study please contact the lead researcher, Richard Grafton, at: richard.grafton@bristol.ac.uk
