Participatory Research Methods for Inclusive Poverty Research
Online
Note - the Zoom link will be shared with registered attendees in due course
The Bristol Poverty Institute (BPI) are excited to announce an upcoming event in collaboration with our friends at Brigstow Institute to workshop Participatory Research Methods for Inclusive Poverty Research.
This event is for University of Bristol researchers and will introduce different types of participatory research methods for working with marginalised groups and/or those whose voices aren’t always heard. Speakers will reflect on the lessons they have learned around key areas (accessing communities, building trust, co-designing activities, remuneration for participation, etc.) as well as the value of their methods, and will share some stories about their respective experiences of engaging with different communities. They will also explore issues relating to quantitative research which effectively engages other voices, concepts around co-produced research, and when and how creative methods can be used.
Our event will start with an introduction from the Bristol Poverty Institute and Brigstow Institute setting the scene for our event. This will be followed by several short presentations on different participatory research methods from our speakers, sharing their successes and challenges. We will then move into breakout groups to workshop questions and challenges offering the opportunity for peer-to-peer support and knowledge exchange, before coming back together to reflect on the takeaways from this event.
We already have a fantastic panel of speakers confirmed, including:
- Ms Sara Davies, Senior Research Fellow in Geographical Sciences
- Professor Helen Manchester, Professor of Participatory Sociodigital Futures
- Dr Camilla Morelli, Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology
- Professor Debbie Watson, Brigstow Institute Director and Professor in Child and Family Welfare
The aim of this event is to encourage more academics doing poverty-relevant research to learn about these types of methods, exploring ways for researchers to effectively and inclusively engage with people with lived experience of poverty and other intersecting inequalities. It will also provide an introduction to some of the key considerations to get researchers started and will signpost opportunities for further information and training, particularly those offered by Brigstow. The event is for University of Bristol researchers at all career stages, including PhD researchers.
If you have experience of participatory research methods in a poverty-relevant context and are interested in giving a short (<5min) talk as part of this event, please get in touch with the Bristol Poverty Institute team via bristol-poverty-institute@bristol.ac.uk to register your interest in presenting.
