Understanding the presence and dynamics of atmospheres on rocky and gaseous exoplanets with their broadband thermal emission

The thermal emission from exoplanet atmospheres and surfaces encodes a lot of information about their composition and structure. I will discuss how we can measure the broadband thermal emission from rocky exoplanets to search for atmospheres, presenting models that highlight observational degeneracies between atmospheres and surfaces, and proposing detection strategies. I will then discuss how we can use thermal emission from gaseous exoplanets with high signal-to-noise ratios to map their atmospheric structure and draw conclusions about their fluid dynamics.
