Biography
I have a BSc in Physics and Astronomy from Manchester University, an MSc in Astronomical Technology from Edinburgh University and a PhD in Novel Imaging Methods from Cardiff University. Since my PhD I have been providing Linux computing support for the Astrophysics Group in the School of Physics at Bristol University as well as some other groups in Physics and in other Schools. I also have some Astrophysical research interests, see below.
Research interests
It was working with high resolution images of the star Betelgeuse in my PhD that started my interest in the late evolutionary stages of massive stars. Since then I have been involved with several international galactic H-alpha surveys: The SuperCOSMOS H-alpha Survey (SHS), The INT Photometric Hα Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) and The VST Photometric Hα Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+) and identified many new Planetary Nebulae (PNe). Currently I am working on data from the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (WEAVE) spectrograph on the 4.2m WHT on La Palma looking at some PNe in the Northern Galactic Plane. I also keep up with what is happening on, or around, Betelgeuse!
Current researchers and PhD students
I am not taking on any students at this time.
I am a very experienced final year project supervisor and support a lot of our undergraduates.
