My work explores the ways that human experiences become biologically embedded, influencing health across multiple levels, from psychological wellbeing to physiological processes associated with stress and disease.

A central theme of my research is understanding how people respond to sustained demands. I'm interested in why some individuals remain healthy, engaged, and resilient in the face of significant pressures, while others experience burnout, distress, or declining health. In particular, I study how social relationships, solidarity, meaning, expectations, and obligations influence health and wellbeing over time.

My research spans a range of contexts united by this common question. I have co-led the CV19 Heroes Project, which has tracked the experiences and wellbeing of frontline workers since the very start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I currently lead research exploring the biopsychosocial mechanisms of diabetes burnout. I am also involved in the SOS OPMax programme, where I am interested in understanding factors that influence stress, burnout, wellbeing, performance, and career sustainability among orthopaedic surgeons.

Alongside this work, I have extensive experience evaluating social prescribing initiatives, including arts- and nature-based programmes. More broadly, I am interested in how communities, workplaces, healthcare systems, and wider social environments can either support or undermine health and wellbeing.

Ultimately, my research seeks to understand how social and societal experiences get under the skin, and how that knowledge can be used to improve lives, healthcare, and the systems in which people live and work.
