Research interests
Dr Katie Breheny is a Health Economist and Chartered Psychologist. Katie joined the University of Bristol in 2018 as a Research Associate in Health Economics. She is jointly based in the NIHR ARC West and Health Economics Bristol (HEB) and is currently an NIHR DEM-COMM Fellow, funded by NIHR ARC West and the Alzheimer’s Society. Her research will explore the use of ICECAP capability-wellbeing measures in dementia patients.
Katie has a BSc in Psychology (University of Kent), MSc in Research Methods in Psychology (University of Reading) and an MSc in Health Economics and Health Policy (University of Birmingham). Her PhD explored the economic evaluation of school based public health interventions and was completed at the University of Birmingham.
Following her Psychology training, Katie worked for a consultancy undertaking patient reported outcomes research. This involved the psychometric validation of PROMs and the development of preference-based utility algorithms from disease-specific measures. Having gained an interest in Health Economics, Katie completed an NIHR Research Methods Fellowship in Birmingham which involved completing an MSc in Health Economics and Health Policy. Upon completion of the fellowship, Katie remained at Birmingham, registering for a PhD and working on projects exploring the use of health economics in public health. Prior to her current NIHR DEMM-COMM Fellowship she held a NIHR SPHR Post-Doctoral Launching Fellowship at the University of Bristol, focusing on the application of health economics to public health. This was awarded in 2020, following the completion of her PhD.
