I am Professor of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Bristol and Honorary Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at North Bristol NHS Trust, with a career dedicated to advancing surgical care, research, and education. My clinical and academic work centres on improving outcomes in colorectal cancer and developing patient-centred approaches to shared decision making.

As a researcher, I have published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, including lead and senior authorship in Journal of Clinical Oncology and PLOS Medicine. My contributions to core outcome set methodology have shaped international standards, influencing regulators, funders, and guideline developers such as NICE, EMA, and the Cochrane Collaboration. I have secured funding from leading funders including NIHR and MRC. My current programme integrates real-time monitoring of patients’ experiences into routine surgical care, already benefitting thousands of patients monthly.

Alongside research, I am deeply committed to medical education. I co-lead the final year of Bristol’s MBChB programme, overseeing training 300 future doctors annually. Recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I have been awarded for outstanding educational leadership.
