First volunteers to receive blood cultured from stem cells in 2016
The first human volunteer will receive red blood cells cultured in the laboratory within the next three years, as part of a long-term research programme funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Eleven research teams in eight of the University's Schools have received grants totalling £170,000 to accelerate the impact of their research. These awards were made through pilot funding schemes from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

A new collaboration between University of Bristol researchers Dr Matthew Brown and Dr Karen Tucker and media company Chaka Films has been awarded £50,000 as part of REACT Future Documentary Sandbox – an AHRC-funded initiative to encourage new forms of storytelling exploring the documentary format, arts and humanities research and digital technologies.
Deciphering the role of fat stem cells in obesity and diabetes
With three million people dying worldwide each year as a direct result of being overweight or obese, a new study will look at stem cells to pinpoint how excess fat is stored – potentially paving the way for new treatments to combat killer diseases associated with obesity.
