Honorary degrees awarded [9 July]

Bristol University is awarding honorary degrees to Dr Charles Bennett, computer scientist and physicist and Professor Nigel Thrift, Vice-Chancellor, University of Warwick, at today’s [9 July] degree ceremonies in the Wills Memorial Building.
Bristol University is awarding honorary degrees to Dr Charles Bennett, computer scientist and physicist and Professor Nigel Thrift, Vice-Chancellor, University of Warwick, at today’s [9 July] degree ceremonies in the Wills Memorial Building.

Dr Charles Bennett, IBM Fellow at IBM Research, computer scientist and physicist, will be honoured with the degree of Doctor of Science at the 11 am ceremony. The orator for the ceremony is Sandu Popescu, Professor of Physics at the University.

Professor Nigel Thrift, FBA, Vice-Chancellor, University of Warwick, Emeritus Professor, University of Bristol, and a Bristol graduate, will be honoured with the degree of Doctor of Laws at the 2 pm ceremony. The orator for the ceremony is Wendy Larner, Professor of Human Geography and Sociology at the University.

An honorary degree is a major accolade, awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement and distinction in a field or activity consonant with the University’s mission.
