For this next instalment at Data Ethics Club we will be discussing the article: Ask Me Anything! How ChatGPT Got Hyped Into Being. The author, Jascha Bareis (who will be attending the session and will give a brief intro of his work) has recommended reading from page 9 onwards (skipping the theoretical aspect of hype) for those shorter on time!

Discussion questions:

  1. Are hypes around technology driven by single actors or must they be understood as a societal dynamic? If yes, who/what drives it?
  2. Are hypers always opportunists and 'bullshiters' or aren't there also firm believers in their cause?
  3. Who decides that society is experiencing a hype or rather a promising future trajectory?
