A talk/discussion to mark World Suicide Prevention Day (Sunday, 10th September). One might expect the experience of life as a battle with inner demons to be far from an unfamiliar concept within a university. High achievement by students or academics is not necessarily due to freedom from inner struggle, but of having found a favourable truce on the battlefield. In this presentation I will recount the life of a young person who struggled unsuccessfully to find the skills to contain their inner demons, the contribution of the Health Services, and the difficult questions it raises about the definition of mental health and approaches to treatment. Please be advised that this presentation includes content which some may find distressing.
