Concerts

The Department of Music hosts a variety of musical events that are open to the public, usually in the magnificent auditorium at the Victoria Rooms. Our main focus is on concerts by University of Bristol students, although we also welcome visiting performers, including the Bristol Ensemble; and the award-winning brass band from the Rhondda Valley, The Cory Band. Programmes include sounds from every era, from medieval chant to world premières, from chamber music to electronic sound art, from opera to jazz.

We also collaborate with our partners in venues across the city, including various churches and the Anglican Cathedral, Bristol Beacon, St George's Bristol, Spike Island, the Arnolfini arts centre. Student ensembles give concerts in some of these venues, and some ensembles also give concerts elsewhere in the Bristol area and further afield in the United Kingdom, across all musical genres. The annual Bristol University Music Society Spring tour is a highlight for many classical musicians across the university, visiting Belgium in Spring 2024 and Bilbao in Spring 2025.

The Department of Music co-hosts the Bristol New Music festival, a biennial collaboration with Bristol Beacon, Spike Island and St George's Bristol. The festival showcases established and new artists (including some of our students), across a wide variety of contemporary musical styles.
