Stata installation instructions
All internal short course candidates are given access to Stata. The installation method to use depends on whether you are using a University of Bristol networked PC or a personally owned PC, and on your operating system.
Please note these instructions are for University of Bristol short course participants only.
External participants are responsible for providing their own access to Stata, however if you are a student, Stata offer a short term free Student licence (one week).
University of Bristol networked PCs
- Use the search bar by the Startup Menu to search for Company Portal.
- Open the Company Portal app.
- Search for Stata. Select Install.
If you have a new mac running BigSur or above you will have a 'Self Service' app rather than 'Managed Software Center'.
- Connect to the VPN. (To download the VPN go to the University of Bristol IT services VPN: How to Connect page. Select the correct operating system. Follow the instructions for installation and to connect.)
- Go to your Applications menu or folder and select and open Self Service / Managed Software Center. Alternatively you can search in Spotlight.
- Locate Stata in the list. Click Install.
Personally owned PCs
- To order Stata from the University's software download site click on the link and enter your login details if prompted.
- Click on the University's software download site link.
- Search for Stata.
- Select it and select your operating system.
- Click on Add to cart > Checkout > Continue to place the order (free).
- The order confirmation screen will contain a download link, the essential Licensing Information you need to set it up, and access to full instructions. You will receive an email from University of Bristol titled 'Order Invoice' where you can also access the licensing information.
- Download and set up Stata using this information.
This must not be used for UOB devices as it will cause problems when updates occur. If using a personal laptop only use this if you are unable to order it from the UoB website (see above).
- Sign up for a short-term free Evaluate Stata license if you are a university employee (available to employees of universities and other institutions, 35 days for university employees). Or if you are a registered student sign up for a short term free Student license (one week). You will need to register your details and submit a request for the license.
- Once the license has expired it will stop working. A license will then need to be purchased.
