Summary
Clinical and public health randomised controlled trials (RCTs) generate the gold standard evidence. Athene has focused on the design and conduct of healthcare RCTs, notably in prostate cancer and urology, after initial research in plant biology. She has also aimed to make trials more efficient and responsive to healthcare and patient needs.
Athene did a biology degree before her PhD and research in plant sciences at Long Ashton Research Station in Bristol. After joining the University of Bristol in 1996, she coordinated a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of Helicobacter pylori and dyspepsia (indigestion). In 2001, she commenced on the landmark NIHR-funded ProtecT trial of treatments for prostate cancer. This trial has influenced national and international policy and has recently analysed 15-year results. She has also led a pilot RCT of dietary modification for prostate cancer prevention by green tea and tomatoes.
Athene has researched how to improve the design and conduct of RCTs, including patients perspectives and trial oversight. She has been involved in RCTs in prostate cancer, urology, nephrology, emergency medicine and primary care which inform NICE guidelines. She teaches and advises on trial methodology and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Clinical Trials.
This talk will be followed by a free drinks reception.
