Summary

Medical schools are given the task of producing new doctors for the NHS. How do they do this? In this lecture we explore how the teaching of medical students in the UK, and Bristol Medical School in particular, has evolved in the last 30 years. What should our medical students learn about and how? How did medical schools adapt to the challenges of COVID?

Find out how medical students are assessed before they can graduate as doctors. The answer involves patients, actors and an array of health professionals. Overseeing all of this is the General Medical Council which in 2024 is launching a new national exam that all new doctors must pass.

If all of this sounds a bit daunting, spare a thought for our students. They need a supportive learning environment in order to thrive – and therein lies the greatest challenge and joy of teaching.

This talk will be followed by a small drinks reception.
