Quantum computing expert on the BBC

Professor Ashley Montanaro from the School of Mathematics spoke to the BBC this week (Tuesday 17 March) to respond to new Government proposals for support for quantum computing.

Professor Montanaro, who is co-founder of the quantum algorithms company Phasecraft, was interviewed on Radio 4’s Today programme (listen from 11’16” at BBC sounds) and the BBC News Channel.

He spoke about the growth of quantum computing in the UK, commenting that “the UK is seen as a really fantastic place to build these companies” and supporting the Chancellor’s announcement of support for this research area.

Phasecraft recently received $34 million in Series B funding to support its work in developing hardware-agnostic quantum algorithms for material discovery, chemistry applications, energy networks, and logistics optimization, providing quantum solutions suitable for adoption in the near future.

Quantum information is a long-standing strategic priority for the School of Mathematics and for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Activity ranges from undergraduate units taught in the School right through to industrial co-creation at the University’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.
