Dr Laura Monk's work on hyperbolic geometry was chosen by Quanta Magazine as one of 2025’s three biggest breakthroughs in mathematics worldwide. Her work, joint with Professor Nalini Anantharam from the Collège de France, was previously featured in the Pulitzer Prize-winning magazine and has gained new recognition with this award.
A further distinction for Dr Monk is her invitation to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia in July. This quadrennial meeting is the most prestigious event on the mathematical calendar, and will see the award of the Fields Medals. Recent ICM speakers from the School include Professor Jeremy Rickard (Berlin, 1998), Professors Jens Marklof and Trevor Wooley (both in Seoul, 2014) and Professor Balint Toth (Rio de Janeiro, 2018).
