TIMBER!

TIMBER!

Montage showing William Ewart Gladstone (29 December 1809 - 19 May 1898), the Grand Old Man of nineteenth-century politics pursuing one of his leisure interests, felling trees on his estate at Hawarden Castle in Flintshire, North Wales. Gladstone was felling trees at Hawarden on 1 December 1868, when he received a telegram from Queen Victoria, asking him to form a Government. After reading the telegram he returned to his tree felling, and then said 'My mission is to pacify Ireland'. This montage comes from a fine red velvet covered album, which chronicles the political and personal life of Gladstone. Special Collections holds an extensive collection of papers relating to Gladstone and his involvement with the Liberal Party, which came as part of the National Liberal Club Library (known as the Gladstone Library) which the Library purchased in the 1970s.
