Broccoli Standard

This leaflet was published by the Liberal Publication Department and filed in their volume of publications for 1929, which is held in the Archives and Library of the National Liberal Club. The Liberal Party under the auspices of their leader Lloyd George (1863-1945) are parodying the efforts of the Conservative Party under the leadership of Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947). In the 1929 Election Campaign Baldwin and the Conservatives stood under the banner 'Safety First', campaigning for food taxes and duties on food imports; James Ramsay MacDonald (1866-1937) and the Labour Party stood under the banner 'No monkeying'; and there seemed to be a concerted effort so that Lloyd George would not return to power. In the May 1929 Election there were 59 Liberal MPs, 260 Conservative MPs, and 287 Labour MPs elected. The Labour Party formed a minority government.
