Embracing the humble clog and the intricacies of clock making; memorialising sugar boiling, cannon founding, and gardening; describing the nature of created things and the creative processes of the arts and sciences, the great encyclopaedia edited by Diderot and d’Alembert is a monument to the thirst for knowledge of the eighteenth century. The project can be traced back to a desire to translate the ‘Cyclopaedia’ of Ephraim Chambers but far surpassed the size of its inspiration. Bristol’s historians and archaeologists are well served by its comprehensive accounts and lavish suites of illustration.
