Fourteenth-century indenture

Fourteenth-century indenture

This document of 1376 records in French the gift by ‘Robert de Maunton viker del esglise de Eccles’ and ‘John Cupper chaplayn’ of the Manor of Slaghtwayt (that is today Slaithwaite in Yorkshire) in trust to the chaplains Robert Collan, Robert de Penulton, John del Stoles, John Haster and Richard Braybon to enfeoff John, son of William Cay. Note the serrated edge and decapitated letter forms providing a means of authenticating the counterpart copy of this transaction, which would have been written the other way up before the parchment was cut in two. An impressive array of seals is appended. After this document was acquired for the University of Bristol Centre for Medieval Studies, the owner of the counterpart presented a copy of his half to the University.
