Letter to England

Letter to England

The Reverend Henry Caner (c.1700-1792), was a leading Church of England clergyman in Connecticut and Massachusetts, USA. He was appointed a missionary clergyman by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, at Fairfield, Connecticut; and in 1747, was made rector of King's Chapel, the most important Anglican Church in New England. In 1776, like many other loyalists, he returned to England (he was born in Long Ashton, near Bristol, where he died). Special Collections hold the letterbook which he kept between 1728 and 1778, which is a copy of much of his outgoing correspondence, particularly with the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. In this letter dated 13 September 1736, from Fairfield, he reports to the Society how his work is proceeding and on what he has achieved. DM388
