Kings Weston

‘The ancient and present state of Glostershire’ by Sir Robert Atkyns (published in 1712) is celebrated for its bird’s eye prospects of the great houses of the county, drawn and engraved by Johannes Kip. Edward Southwell was one of the clerks of the Privy Council and Principal Secretary of State for Ireland. Atkyns notes, ‘He has a pleasant seat in this place, with delightful gardens, and a full prospect on the King Road, the harbour to the city of Bristol, and over the Severn Sea, into Wales’.
