Pride and prejudice

Pride and prejudice

The move of the Austen ladies to the village of Chawton, in July 1809, provided Jane with the domestic stability that allowed her writing to flourish once more. The University Library is fortunate indeed to possess three of the resulting novels in first edition format, generously presented by C. Cyril Clarke in 1959, namely ‘Pride and prejudice’ (1813); ‘Mansfield Park’ (1814); and ‘Emma’ (1816). Each novel appeared in three volumes. ‘Pride and prejudice’ cost 18 shillings in simple boards. The Library copy, however, boasts an attractive contemporary binding dignified by the crest of the Earls of Minto, a title created in the month after publication.
