Student rag activities

This float made by University of Bristol Students took part in the Rag Procession of 1969. It features a splendid recreation of the dog Dougal from the children's television programme 'The Magic Roundabout' which was first shown on British television from 1965 to 1977, and which has been a favourite ever since. The photograph is pasted into the Burwalls Volume, a large red leather bound volume created by male students who had their Hall of Residence in Burwalls, on the Leigh Woods side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, between 1943 and 1972. During the 1960s Arthur Graves was the Warden and Dr Basil Cottle was a sub-warden. The volume records student activities including Hall Committees, and members, reminiscences of student life including catering and room sharing, Rag events, go-cart racing, debates, dramatic productions, and the like. A minute of 8th May 1951 records 'The Head Student announced that although strong cheese was desirable and suited to many members of Hall, Hall had no choice in the matter, but to take what it could get'. In the 1961 Burwalls students took part in a sedan chair race from Plymouth to Bristol. Links were forged with other halls including Clifton Hill House, and female students were appointed as Burwalls Rag Queen candidates. As former students of the University of Bristol return to Bristol from 3rd to 5th July, to celebrate their time at Bristol and the hundred years of the University of Bristol, we hope that this will remind them of the fun that they had as students.
