The simoom

The simoom

At the approach of the choking sand-bearing storm camels lay their heads close to the desert floor and the sun appears enlarged and blood red. This dramatic lithograph executed by Louis Haghe, after the original by the artist David Roberts, was published in 1849 as part of ‘The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Egypt & Nubia’ (1842-1849), a breathtaking eyewitness record of the Near East, as experienced by Roberts in 1838 and 1839.
