A university for Bristol

A university for Bristol

This cartoon, published in 'The Bristol Guardian' of 9 May 1908, alludes to the campaign to establish a University of Bristol, which was to result in the University College, Bristol, becoming the University of Bristol in May 1909. Dr Ernest Cook, Chairman of the City Education Committee, as the baker on the left, consults the 'German menu' (a reference to the concern that Britain had much to learn from Germany in educational matters), whilst the ratepayers of Bristol (through a penny rate) add to the funding for the University cake. Discussions were in progress at the time as to whether the City of Bristol should help to fund the new University for Bristol and the West of England. The cartoon is taken from the Colston Society scrapbooks, part of the University College and University of Bristol archive, held by Special Collections. DM526/3
