Shakespeariana

Taken from ‘The picturesque beauties of Shakspeare’, this image is a witness to the tremendous vogue in the late eighteenth century for illustrations from Shakespeare, as evidenced also by the opening in 1789 of the Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall. ‘The picturesque beauties’, originally issued in ten numbers between 1783 and 1787, consists of a suite of engravings, made by Charles Taylor and his brother Isaac, after paintings by Robert Smirke and Thomas Stothard.
