Etching by Hablot K. Browne

Etching by Hablot K. Browne

Browne is remembered as the illustrator ‘par excellence’ of the nineteenth-century novel, most notably in close collaboration with Charles Dickens but also with other leading writers of the age, including, as here, his friend, the popular Irish novelist, Charles Lever. The present illustration, ‘Reading the news by deputy’, was published in 1845 in, ‘The O’Donoghue : a tale of Ireland fifty years ago’. The Library’s Early Novel Collection contains numerous examples of Browne’s unrivalled power of evocation.
