This study explores the experiences of trans and non-binary people with family law in England and Wales. Our goal is to create a better understanding of how trans and non-binary people, and their families, use and are impacted by the law in this country.

What is this study about?

The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of trans and non-binary people in the family law of England and Wales. Inviting participants to discuss how they have used the law in relation to a wide range of family matters, the study seeks to identify potential barriers for trans and non-binary people who are using the family justice system, and to assess whether there is a need to reform the law to better respect diversity in gender identity and gender expression.

What will you do in this study?

In this study, you will complete an online survey about whether and how you have experiences of the law in relation to specific family matters, such as marriage, becoming a parent and spending time with children. You can take part in the study from 15 March 2025 to 15 June 2025.  You will also have the opportunity (but will not be required) to take part in follow-up interviews.

Who can participate in the study?

You can participate in this study if you are: (1) 18 years or older; and (2) you have been involved in any matter relating to one or more of the following family issues, which took place in England and Wales and where at least one of the people involved was trans or non-binary: (a) becoming a parent and registering the birth of a child; (b) entering a marriage or a civil partnership; (c) ending a marriage or a civil partnership; (d) living with, having contact with, or making decisions about, children; or (e) end of life decision-making.
Before you take part in the study, you will have to read an Information for Participants Sheet and give your consent to take part in the study.
