CCLAS Director, Clare Torrible, has been published in Policing: An International Journal.

The Centre for Crime, Law, and Society is pleased to share that a new article by its Director, Clare Torrible, has been published in Policing: An International Journal.

In ‘The section 60 stop and search super-complaint and what it reveals’, the article examines the Section 60 super-complaint process as a lens through which to interrogate the operation, oversight and legitimacy of stop and search powers.

It situates the super-complaint within broader debates on police discretion, institutional accountability and racial disproportionality, analysing how the review process exposes structural features of the regulatory framework governing the use of these powers.

By critically evaluating both the substantive findings and the procedural architecture of the super-complaint mechanism, the article illuminates the limits of existing accountability structures and the implications for democratic control of coercive police powers. In doing so, it contributes to ongoing scholarly and policy discussions concerning equality, legality and the governance of preventive policing within the criminal justice system.
