Global Day of Action: The potential of the Severn Estuary as a source of tidal power

In line with the water theme of the 6th Global Day of Action, the University of Bristol Law Clinic is hosting an insightful panel discussion on the potential of the Severn Estuary as a source of tidal power. This event will bring together diverse perspectives on a topic at the intersection of sustainability and controversy, exploring several challenges. The discussion also aims to connect legal clinics across the globe to raise awareness and take collective action in response to the climate emergency.

Key Speakers/Panellists:
Sir Jonathon Porritt - Formally co-chair of the Green Party and an eminent writer and campaigner on sustainable development. He advises various organisations and notable individuals, including King Charles, on environmental matters.
Professor Colin Taylor – Served on the stakeholder panel of the government review of Severn tidal power in 2010.
Dr Andrew Garrard CBE – Appointed Chair of the Severn Estuary Commission in March 2024, where he is tasked with exploring the feasibility of generating power from the Severn Estuary. He is a former part-time Professor at the University of Bristol.
Temitope Onifade – A Lecturer at the University of Bristol, he is a specialist in the sociological aspects of environmental law and sustainability, with a focus on how these areas affect government, business, and civil society.
The event will be chaired by Professor Catherine Kelly (Head of Law School).
